The Imposter’s Playbook: Psychological Warfare & Manipulation
What’s up guys, after grinding a ton of Among Us lately, I’ve realized that playing Imposter isn’t just about sneaking around and getting kills anymore it’s an art of psychological manipulation. Winning by just slashing everyone is basic; winning by making the Crewmates tear each other apart is peak gameplay.
Here are some of the most toxic, big-brain tricks I use to completely play the lobby. Save these for your next session:
1. The Art of Framing & Manipulation
- The “Sus Room” Setup: See two Crewmates walk into a room together? Quietly close the doors to that room and walk away. Being trapped in a locked room together naturally makes them paranoid, and they will immediately start suspecting each other.
- The Magic 3-Man Trick: Catch three people stacked in a room? Sabotage the lights immediately, vent in, get a kill, and vent right back out. When the lights come back on, the two survivors will instantly hard-accuse each other, and you’re completely off the hook.
- The 200 IQ Alibi: If you see someone doing the Download task (which takes forever), stand next to them and fake it. Quickly hop in a vent, navigate to another room, get a kill, and vent back to stand next to them before they finish downloading. During the emergency meeting, that Crewmate will literally defend you, saying, “they were with me the whole time.”
- The “Perfect Witness” Scenario: After a kill, walk out, close the door, and just chill right outside. When another player walks by, pretend to be curious and walk into the room with them to “accidentally discover” the body together. They will subconsciously group you as a fellow innocent Crewmate.
2. Movement & Hiding in Plain Sight
- Body Blind Spots: Don’t just kill in the middle of the floor. Try to drop bodies in graphical blind spots: right above the Admin table, behind the center chair in Navigation, or tucked in the bottom left corner of Shields. People rushing by will often completely walk past the body without seeing it.
- The Truth About Vents: A lot of players are terrified to vent because they think it makes a loud noise. False! Only Imposters can hear the vent sound. Crewmates are completely deaf to it.
- Life or Death Reminder: While you are hiding inside a vent, your Kill Cooldown is FROZEN. Stop camping in the vents all game!
3. Damage Control & Sabotages
- Silencing the Cam Campers: Got caught getting a kill because the red camera light was blinking? Don’t panic. Instantly close the Security room doors to lock them in, then run the cut-off route to intercept them on their way to the Emergency button. Silence the witness before they hit the buzzer.
- Baiting the Body: Right after you get a kill, trigger a major sabotage (like O2 or Reactor) on the exact opposite side of the map. The entire lobby will blindly rush away from your kill location.
- Stalling a Crewmate Win: If the taskbar is almost full, immediately sabotage Communications (Comms). This hides the taskbar and their task arrows, meaning they have no idea where to go to finish their last tasks, buying you massive amounts of time.
- The Stack Kill: When 4 or 5 people are stacked on top of each other fixing lights or comms, just hit the kill button. It’s impossible for anyone to tell who actually swung the knife.
4. Lethal Micro-Tips
- Faking Tasks Safely: Only fake tasks that don’t immediately update the taskbar (like Download, Gas/Wiring in Storage, or Garbage in Cafeteria). Also, the most natural time to pull up your Sabotage menu is while you are “faking” a task or staring at the Admin table.
- Shapeshifter Rule #1: Never shift into someone the lobby already thinks is highly “sus.” If you accidentally run into the real version of them, you just gave them a hard clear. Instead, shift into the most “safe” and trusted player in the lobby, get a kill as them, and watch their reputation crumble as the team turns on them.
Playing Imposter is about using your brain, not just your kill button. Use these tricks to twist the truth, and you’ll see how insanely fun it is to watch the Crewmates scream at each other in the meeting room. Go test these out in your next game!
How to play
The controls are flawlessly consistent across all platforms. Use the virtual joystick or WASD keys to navigate the ship and interact with objects to perform Tasks. If you are a Crewmate, complete your list or find and Report bodies. If you are an Impostor, use the Kill button to eliminate targets and the Sabotage button to cripple the ship’s systems like Lights, Oxygen, or the Reactor. During a Meeting, use the chat or voice to discuss and Vote to eject suspects into the cold void of space.
Progression & levels
While there are no power-ups for leveling, the Experience system rewards you with account levels that showcase your dedication. As you progress, you’ll earn Beans and Stars to spend in the store. Mastering maps like The Skeld, Mira HQ, Polus, and The Airship is essential to finding the best hiding spots and strategic shortcuts for the perfect kill or a timely escape.
Special features
The heart of the game is the Sabotage system, forcing Crewmates into a race against time to fix critical failures. Attentive players will use tools like Security Cameras, the Admin Map, and the Vitals monitor to track suspicious movements. For Impostors, the Vents are a signature feature, allowing for near-instant travel between rooms to create foolproof alibis.
Customization
As you advance, you’ll unlock a quirky collection of skins, from hats and pets to outfits and unique Visor cosmetics. These outfits add a unique personality to your astronaut; they don’t change the game’s physics, but they certainly make your victory or your betrayal look much cooler. Just remember, looking too flashy might make you an easy target during heated debates!
Tips to win
- For Crewmates: Stick together in groups of two or three to verify each other’s innocence. Keep track of who was where when a body is reported.
- For Impostors: Don’t rush your kills. Fake your tasks convincingly and use Sabotage to lure players away from each other.
- Master the Vents: Always ensure no one is around before you hop in or out of a vent.
- The Power of Persuasion: In meetings, provide logical arguments. Sometimes, accused Impostors can win by “Self-reporting” and turning the blame on the discoverer.
- Visual Tasks: Use tasks like Medbay Scan or Clear Asteroids to prove your innocence to the group, as they have visible animations.
